Colfax, Calif.- The 18-month-old boy who drowned in a PG&E canal in Colfax today has been identified at Zachary Mather.

He was walking along the canal with his stepmother when they both slipped on ice and went into the frigid canal around 9:30 a.m. The woman was able to get out of the water, but was unable to save Zachary. He was found in a straining gate approximately one-half mile downstream from where they entered the water. Members of the Placer County Sheriff’s dive team went into the water and retrieved him.ย
