Sacramento native Daniel Hahn to serve in Roseville

Roseville City Manager Ray Kerridge announced today his selection of Daniel Hahn, a captain with 23 years of service at the Sacramento Police Department, as the City’s next police chief.

In searching for the next police chief, City Manager Ray Kerridge had a long list of requirements. “I was looking for a visionary with solid management experience and a proven track record of innovation in community policing to lead the police department as Roseville grows from an urban to a metropolitan community,” he said.

‘We got all of that and more with Chief Hahn. He’s the kind of change agent and relationship builder who will have a strong, positive effect on the community as well as the region,’ Kerridge said.

Hahn, 42, a lifelong resident of Sacramento, has been serving on the leadership team of the Sacramento Police Department. He has been a champion of neighborhood outreach and community policing, working with businesses and residents on safety strategies with a heavy emphasis on communication. He developed the first comprehensive school-attendance center in Sacramento, bringing together social workers and community based organizations, along with law enforcement, to address truancy issues with students and their families. He also founded the Grant High School Criminal Justice Magnet Academy.

A nationwide search was launched in the fall after current Police Chief Michael Blair announced his April retirement. The search attracted 62 applicants from throughout the country and the top six candidates came to Roseville for additional interviews last month. Sixteen representatives from the community, the city, and law enforcement were divided into three panels that evaluated candidates on technical expertise, community relations and outreach, and media relations.

The panelists unanimously recommended Hahn as the top candidate to City Manager Ray Kerridge who made the final decision.

‘We have a history of great relationships with law enforcement agencies in our region and particularly with the Roseville Police Department,’ said Roseville Joint Union High School District Superintendent Tony Monetti, one of the panelists. ‘Daniel Hahn stood out among the candidates. He brings a realization of the importance of working with the community and with schools in particular. I look forward to continuing our partnership with Roseville.’

Placer County Sheriff Ed Bonner, another panelist, said, ‘I’m excited about the selection and look forward to working with Chief Hahn as part of the law enforcement team in our region.’

‘I was very impressed with Captain Hahn’s strong approach to community policing,’ said panelist Werner Kuehn, president of the Roseville Coalition of Neighborhood Associations. ‘I found him to be enthusiastic about the value of close partnerships with neighborhood groups, having conducted frequent town hall meetings that provided valuable information and great results in solving crime issues.”

Hahn will be sworn in at 11 a.m., Friday, March 4 in the rotunda of Roseville’s Civic Center, 311 Vernon St., allowing for some transition time with Blair, who officially retires April 8. Hahn will earn an annual salary of $174,000.

He is a graduate of Police Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T) Command College, the FBI National Academy, and earned a master’s degree in public administration from National University and a business administration degree from California State University, Sacramento. He has received many unit, program, and individual awards, including the ChoicePoint Award for Excellence in Criminal Investigation from International Association of Chiefs of Police and the Excellence In Training Award from the National Organization for Black Law Enforcement Executives.
