Roseville, Calif. – USA Properties Fund Inc., one of the largest apartment community developer-builder-managers in the West, has hired industry veteran April Atkinson as Executive Vice President of Property Management.

Atkinson, most recently Vice President of Property Management for the Irvine Company in the Bay Area, will oversee the property management ofย USA Properties’ 84-community portfolio. She succeeds Karen McCurdy, President of USA Multifamily Management Inc. and Senior Vice President of USA Properties Fund, who is retiring after 22 years with the company.

“April brings more than 20 years of experience in the industry, primarily in the management of market-rate apartments, which will give USA an added dimension as we enter into this new space,” said Geoff Brown, President of USA Properties Fund. “She has been a successful team builder and an effective mentor, critical skills that are necessary as our company continues to evolve.”

USA Properties Fund, a longtime owner-manager of affordable family and senior apartment communities, has started developing market-rate apartment communities, with the first opening in a few months in South Sacramento. Other market-rate apartment communities are in various stages of development.ย  Affordable housing will continue to be the company’s primary activity.

The 35-year-old company has embraced an aging-in-place initiative and the development of energy-efficient communities. USA Properties also partners with LifeSTEPS, the social services provider at many of its affordable communities, on the JB Brown Fund, which ranges from providing college and youth sports scholarships to covering unexpected expenses for low-income residents.

“USA Properties Fund is well respected in the industry, from building quality communities to its mission of providing services and helping meet the needs of its residents,” Atkinson said. “I’m excited about the endless opportunities and sharing my experience, especially in the market-rate environment.”

Atkinson had been managing a portfolio of more than 8,000 units for the Irvine Company. The company’s portfolio in the Northern California region, thanks largely to Atkinson’s efforts, has doubled during the past four years.

Atkinson joined the Irvine Company – best known for the master-planned city of Irvine – in 2002.

McCurdy and Atkinson will work together for some time, to ensure a smooth transition for the property management division and USA Properties. McCurdy will retire in September.

“I’m extremely proud of the company’s accomplishments, the employees who I have worked with and, most importantly, providing much-needed quality housing to so many residents. My gratitude for the opportunities I was given and the experiences and memories I have enjoyed at USA will always be with me.” McCurdy said.

She saw USA Properties add more than 10,000 units and the creation of USA Multifamily Management during her career.

“We are very grateful for Karen’s dedication, direction, hard work and vision for so many years,” Brown said. “She has truly helped the company grow and thrive, and has played an important role in our success.”
