The expanded hours will increase visiting hours for the wonderful animals waiting to be adopted into a loving home. In addition to caring for thousands of animals each year, Placer County animal services also helps owners reconnect with lost and found pets, as well as secure dog licenses. Licenses are required for all dogs 4 months of age or older by law in Placer County. Licensing helps identify dogs in the event they stray from home and helps animal services staff reunite pets with their owners. Licensing also helps ensure that dogs are vaccinated for rabies, which can be deadly to humans.

Animal services also offers shelter services for strays and unwanted animals, spay and neuter programs that help reduce animal overpopulation, investigations into animal neglect or cruelty, animal health care and many other animal control services.

Animal services’ goal is to establish and maintain a safe and healthy environment shared between humans and animals. County staff strive to educate the public on responsible pet ownership, protect public health and safety and ensure humane treatment of animals throughout Placer County.

Placer County is building a modern animal services facility, replacing its dated and worn building in North Auburn with a $23 million, state-of-the-art facility to provide the best possible care for Placer County’s rescued animals. The 29,500-square-foot facility is expected to open by autumn of this year.
