Maynard to take on new role January 2022

Auburn, Calif.- Longtime Placer County Assessor’s Office manager Matthew Maynard will replace retiring Assessor Kristen Spears in January following his unanimous appointment today by the county Board of Supervisors.

Spears announced her retirement earlier this month, effective Dec. 31. Maynard will serve the remainder of her current term, from Jan. 1, 2022, to Jan. 1, 2023. By the county charter, vacancies of elective offices other than the Board of Supervisors are appointed by the board for the duration of the incumbent’s term.

“I am confident we are well positioned to continue our mission of serving the people of Placer County.”

“I think it’s terrific that we have an opportunity to appoint Matt,” said District 1 Supervisor Bonnie Gore. “For this position somebody really needs to understand the challenges of assessing property, working with business owners and residents and making sure what’s done for our tax rolls is appropriate. I have the confidence in Matt to do that.”

Maynard joined the Assessor’s Office in 2007 as an appraisal technician and was promoted to a senior management position with the office in 2013. He has served as chief appraiser since 2017 and oversees the office’s residential and agricultural property appraisals.

A native of the Placer foothills, he graduated summa cum laude from National University with a Bachelor of Science degree in organizational leadership.

“I’m honored to have been appointed by the Board of Supervisors to serve the remainder of Assessor Spears’ term,” said Maynard. “Working in the Placer County Assessor’s Office for the past 15 years has prepared me for taking on this responsibility and I look forward to guiding the organization in the year ahead. We have an amazing team in place thanks to the assessor’s quality leadership and I am confident we are well positioned to continue our mission of serving the people of Placer County.”

Kristen Spears

Spears was appointed as assessor in 2008. She first won election in 2010 and was re-elected in 2014 and 2018. Spears served as president of the Northern California Assessors’ Association in 2012, and as president of the statewide California Assessors’ Association in 2016.

“I’ve known Matt for almost 15 years as he has worked his way up in the Assessor’s Office, and over that period he has either worked in or supervised nearly every division in our office,” Spears said. “It has really been a pleasure to work with Matt over these years and see his growth and development. I’m confident that as the next assessor Matt will serve the citizens of Placer County well.”
