Getaway in the Foothills
Nevada City, Calif. – Nevada City’s charm shines more brightly at night. At least that was the takeaway following a midweek date night with my wife.
Less than an hour’s drive from Roseville, the easy drive up Highway 49 offered the perfect opportunity to leave the day’s worries behind and catch up with my wife as we looked forward to an evening out on the town together.
Upon arrival, we instantly noticed a stark contrast from our previous daytime visits to this historical, Gold Rush era, Hallmark movie town of approximately 3,000 residents.
Commercial Street and the surrounding areas were bustling with the sights and sounds of summer. Music emanated from street side pubs and alleys, while couples engaged over drinks and dinner on sidewalk patios. Children enthusiastically enjoyed melting ice cream cones and passerbys strolled around town window shopping and soaking it all in. Patio lighting strung around town added to a happy and lively atmosphere.
Three Forks Bakery & Brewing Company
With many places to choose from, we opted for the very popular Three Forks Bakery & Brewing Company (http://www.threeforksnc.com/). My wife quickly took note of this winning combination. Three Forks is a bright and energetic location strategically positioned in town.
In California tradition, we ordered salads to go with our beers, a Porter and Hefeweizen. The Summer Salad was excellent and included cucumber, cherry tomatoes, charred corn, chickpeas, scallions, feta, basil vinaigrette. My wife enjoyed the House Salad which was made from mixed greens, shredded carrot, soft boiled egg, pickled vegetables, golden raisins, pumpkin seeds with a basil vinaigrette dressing. Dessert was another beer for me and a chocolate chip with walnuts cookie for my wife.
Ideal for Evening Strolls
Following dinner, we spent the evening walking around town, popping our heads into a few places, exploring, checking out jamming musicians and enjoying the warm summer air and conversation.
After a few hours it was time to return to Roseville and head back to reality. Experiencing a side of Nevada City we had not seen before was a surprise and treat for both of us.
The next time we’re asked, we can say with confidence, Nevada City really shines best at night!
