On Saturday, May 16th, the Bear River rapids claimed the life of a 51-year old Newcastleย woman who was tubing with her 10-year old son. The boy survived as he was washed ashore.
While both were wearing their life jackets, the intensity of the rapids stripped the life jacket off the woman and she was trapped beneath the water, where she drowned, according to Cal Fire Officials.
Residents are warned to exercise extreme caution and to avoid entering raging river rapids.
The woman’s name has not yet been released.
