Northeastern football junior defensive lineman David Akinniyi (Rocklin, California) was named to ESPN the Magazine’s Academic All-District first team. The announcement was made by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), whose members vote on the candidates.

For consideration for the honor, a football athlete must play in at least 50 percent of the the team’s games, be a starter or an important reserve, have at least sophomore standing and sport a 3.3 cumulative GPA or better.. By virtue of being named All-District, Akinniyi is now eligible for ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America consideration.

Akinniyi, who majors in Management and has a 3.47 GPA, is a starting defensive end for the Huskies. He has 27 tackles in eight games this season. He leads the Huskies in tackles for a loss with 9.5 that have totaled 41 yards lost. He is also second on the team in sacks with 3.0.

For his career, Akinniyi hads 128 tackles, 21.0 tackles for a loss and 11.0 sacks in 31 games. He is a two-time CAA Football All-Academic team selection.

Akinniyi and the Huskies will play at Massachusetts this Saturday at McGuirk Stadium at 12 p.m. The Huskies return home for Homecoming and Senior Day on Nov. 14 against Hofstra at Parsons Field at 1 p.m.
