An Interview with Local Escape Room Owner

Imagine for a moment that you’re a detective in the early 1960s (notepad, cigarette, fedora and all) charged with the task of solving a series of mysterious deaths or perhaps you recently stumbled upon evidence of a powerful coven of witches and warlocks right in your home town and now they’re doing anything they can to silence you! These are just two case scenarios of the dozens of experiences offered at Beat The Room – an escape room experience with locations in Rocklin and Vacaville. We sat down with the owner, Noel Leckemby, to learn more about this unique local business.

1.  Let’s start with the basics. What is an Escape Room? An escape room is an interactive puzzle game! They got their name because many of the first escape rooms had the objective of “escaping” the game space you were in. Escape rooms have evolved to have many objectives like restarting the spaceship, synthesizing a cure or finding the murderer before the time is up! Beat the Room offers games where you’re “locked in” and plenty where you are not. 

2. What makes an Escape Room so fun? Immersing yourself in a story, set in another time and place separates the game from reality. Plus- it’s an adrenaline rush to win. You also get to see how your teams’ brains work! Different perspectives are needed to be successful in an escape room. It’s a joy to watch people have “a-ha” moments! 

2. What kind of rooms does Beat The Room offer? Are there any Halloween themed ones? Beat The Rooms offers games that range from stealing treasure maps aboard a pirate ship, to finding gold in a mine before it collapses! Each of our 8 rooms are unique and immersive. Our most popular rooms around halloween are Bitten: where you try to slay the Vampire King before you turn into vampires and The Initiation: where you uncover a secret society’s plans and decide to join them or destroy their power. If you’re looking for something less spooky definitely check out Deep Space: where you restart a spaceship to save the crew onboard.  

3. What’s your favorite room personally? I love running rooms where we, as staff, get into character! We play characters for Deep Space (as the space ship’s AI), Noir: The Starlight Murders (as a New York professor), 221b Baker St (as Scotland Yard), Captain’s Quarters (as the captain’s unfaithful parrot), Bitten (as a ghost) but my personal favorite is Chasm! We get to play an old prospector who used to work in the gold mine and helps groups through the now abandoned mine to find gold. “YEEEEEHAW!” 

4. What makes Beat the Room unique from other Escape Rooms? What makes Beat The Room different from our neighbors is our size & unique game endings! We offer 8 games and two lobby spaces so we are able to host groups of 120 guests at a time. Since 2023 we’ve made all of our puzzles in house, supporting us means supporting our artists and aspiring engineers! Many of our new games offer split endings- the choices you make in game affect the outcome and you’d have to play more than once to experience everything the game has to offer.

5. Can people book at Beat The Room for parties and events? Absolutely! We have a party space available for rent after your escape room is over so your group can enjoy gift exchanges or cake – plus we do all the cleaning up! We are also a great option for team building events. We have catering packages available and ample lobby space for team meetings after the escape rooms are complete. We’ve been lucky enough to host events for companies like Kaiser Permanente, Travis Air Force Base and Dutch Bros! We will work tirelessly to make sure your team walks away from their team building feeling a sense of camaraderie and excitement!
