Police officer gets probation for Roseville shoplifting

Sacramento police sergeant pleads “no contest”

A Sacramento police sergeant who was cited for shoplifting in Roseville last May was placed on probation for one year today after entering a plea of no contest to a misdemeanor charge of petty theft.

John Castiglia, 48, who had originally pled not guilty to the charge, changed his plea at a hearing today in which he was to be assigned a trial date.

Placer County Superior Court Judge Alan Pineschi accepted the change of plea and sentenced him to probation, which can be terminated after six months if Castiglia has obeyed all laws, does not violate any terms of his probation and pays a $170 fine, said prosecutor Rick Opich of the Placer County District Attorney’s Office.

Castiglia was cited by Roseville police on May 28, 2010, for taking razor blades and deodorant from a Winco store without paying for the items. Castiglia, who was off duty, had paid for other items while shopping in the store, according to police.
