Annual Funny Bones Comedy Show & Awards Night

Roseville, Calif. – Every year, the Placer SPCA recognizes people, animals, organizations or businesses in Placer County that demonstrate the power of the human-animal bond at their annual Funny Bones Comedy Show & Awards Night. This year, the Placer SPCA was pleased to honor:

RRUFF (Rocklin Residents Unite For Fido) Healing Heroes Program provides scholarships to qualified local disabled veterans for service dog training at no cost to them. In attendance for the Hero Awards ceremony were veterans Eric Theer with his golden retriever Lily, Tina Banks with her poodle Hans, and Mike Chinook with his dog Cappy. Each of these veterans credits their service dogs as the reason why they leave the house every day and live a normal life to the fullest extent. The Healing Heroes Program was the recipient of the Wells Fargo Hero Award.

Gold Country Love on a Leash (LOAL) is a therapy dog organization that spends quality time with those who need it most. Along with 40 volunteers and their dogs, LOAL strives to provide unconditional love and comfort by visiting people in convalescent homes, memory units, and assisted living facilities as well as helping children read at libraries. LOAL volunteers were presented with the Consolidated Communications Hero Award and their canine companions were given “The Boys” Hero Award.

“Big Daddy,” a therapy miniature horse, made his debut at Sutter Medical Center in Roseville where he continues to work his charm and relieve a little stress from the patients that meet him. He is the only mini horse participating in the Roseville therapy program. “Big Daddy” was the recipient of the Ayrshire Farm – In Memory of Mia Hero Award.

This year’s Funny Bones also featured a video produced by Kevin Melin called “A Day in the Life,” sharing the journey of a dog and a cat that arrived at the Placer SPCA. The video highlighted the programs and services offered at the Placer SPCA such as spay and neuter, microchipping, vaccines, lifesaving veterinary care, and the devoted volunteers and staff that work to find forever homes for the companion animals in our community.

Guests enjoyed the comedy of Milt Abel, courtesy of our Sidesplitting Sponsor, Ayrshire Farm – In Memory of Mia, silent and live auctions, and a Grand Prize Drawing. The winner took home a fully-stocked wine refrigerator sponsored by Folsom Lake Bank.

Thanks to the generosity of our guests and supporters, we were able to raise more than $100,000 all of which will help the Placer SPCA continue its work in providing lifesaving programs and services that benefit the people and pets of our community.
