Placer Valley Tourism and Sac State host event
21 women’s teams will compete in NCAA Western Golf Regionals at Lincoln Hills

Twenty-one women’s golf teams are headed for the Lincoln Hills Golf Club to compete in the NCAA Division 1 Women’s Western Regional Golf Tournament May 8-10.  With five players competing from each team, plus three individual players, there will be 108 golfers in the field.

Southern California brings its No. 1 national standing, according to Golfweek/Sagarin performance ratings, to the challenge.  Seven other teams playing at Lincoln Hills are in the top 25 of the same ratings:  Arizona State at No. 5, Oklahoma State 7th, and Arkansas 9th.   The entire field reads like a Who’s Who of women’s collegiate golf with several major university teams in the mix.

Regional tournaments serve as preliminary rounds of NCAA championships competition.  Two other regional tournaments will take place, one being the East, the other the Central.  Eight teams and two individuals will advance from each regional.

Three players whose teams failed to qualify for Lincoln Hills play will compete as individuals. They are Mallory Blackwelder, Kentucky; Danielle Cvitanov, San Francisco; and Emily Powers, Kansas.

The championships finals will be held May 20-23 at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course in Albuquerque.

Placer Valley Tourism worked in conjunction with Sacramento State University in the bidding to get the tournament to the region.  The local tourism group is assisting tournament hosts in housing services, all hospitality functions, and by hosting a pre-tournament reception for all participants.

Kim Ponce, hospitality manager for Placer Valley Tourism, has the challenge of coordinating a crew of volunteers.  She will fill  300 slots to work the three-day event.  There are six basic assignments for volunteers:  shuttles, hospitality, spotters, scoring, administrative and runners. She is counting on a big turnout of volunteers from Sac State, the official host university for this major event.  Ponce can be reached by calling (916)  773-5400 or by e-mailing her at www.kponce@placertourism.com.
