Placer Community Foundation Helps Local Nonprofits Grow and Thrive

Nonprofit Leadership Summit assists organizations throughout Placer County

Auburn, Calif. – Over 200 nonprofit employees, board members and volunteers representing 51 Placer nonprofits attended Placer Community Foundation’s eighth annual Nonprofit Leadership Summit on March 14. The Foundation’s Leadership Summit, a key part of their Nonprofit Initiative program, helps local nonprofit organizations deliver high-quality, more sustainable and more valuable community services by further developing their people, strategy for growth, and managing operations more effectively.

“Nonprofits play a key role in our community. They help our community grow and prosper while supporting our most vulnerable neighbors,” said Veronica Blake, CEO, Placer Community Foundation. “This is largely why our yearly summit is so important. We offer training tools to local partners so they have the tools they need to succeed in addressing community needs.”

This year’s summit focused on storytelling, and was facilitated by Carrie Rice, a national nonprofit consultant, speaker, and trainer based in San Francisco, Calif. She specializes in individual fundraising, strategic planning, and board leadership through her brand, Empathetic Nonprofit Management. To Rice, the key to any nonprofit’s success is empathy, and she outlined how empathy plays a major role in effective marketing throughout the Nonprofit Leadership Seminar.

By way of example, Rice provided real life experiences of effective and ineffective marketing styles, techniques and strategies. She emphasized the significance of understanding one’s audience and engaging hearts (emotion) over minds (logic), in addition to the importance of listening, creating meaningful dialogue, and telling stories that create empathy, feeling and love. All of these elements correlate in creating an effective marketing plan that drives growth.
Following this opportunity to learn best practices for storytelling, many nonprofits were quick to provide feedback on how helpful they found the summit to be:

“The leadership summit was amazing as usual. I learned a lot and our team is excited to implement new ideas and improve upon how we are doing things.” -Amy Maggard, Stand Up Placer.

“Thank you so much for the invitation to the Summit yesterday. We had a great time and received so many helpful resources.” -Chris Angle, Veterans Job Resources.

Placer Community Foundation held this all-day summit with catered lunch, free of charge to nonprofits operating within Placer County through gifts made to the Foundation’s Community Leadership Fund and through the generosity of the following local sponsors: Wells Fargo, Robert Kemp Community Endowment Fund, Kaiser Permanente, US Bank, First 5 of Placer County, Community 1st Bank/First Foundation Bank, Placer County Office of Education, Roseville Auto Mall Association, Armrod Charitable Foundation, The Arp Family Foundation, Auburn Toyota, Azevedo & Associates, Inc., First Northern Bank, First Pointe Management Group, Five Star Bank, HomeTown Realtors, PRIDE Industries, Propp Christensen Caniglia LLP, Recology Auburn Placer, Spectrum Wealth Management, Sutter Health Sacramento Sierra Region/Valley Area, Tri Counties Bank, Western Health Advantage, County of Placer – Board of Supervisors, Leo W.
