A 32-year-old Sacramento County man is facing a suspended 16-month state prison sentence and up to one year in the Placer County jail after pleading guilty to three counts, including one felony, related to failure to provide for a child.
Jason Matthew Maggi, who owes $81,304 in child support, entered the plea May 19 before Placer County Superior Court Judge J. Richard Couzens, who set the sentencing date for Sept. 23.
Maggi is also facing five years of formal probation, according to Placer County Deputy District Attorney Carl Mayhew, the prosecutor in the case.
During Maggi’s preliminary hearing in February, Mayhew presented evidence to establish that Maggi fathered the child of a Placer County woman in 1999 and went years without making required child support payments, although it appeared he led a lavish lifestyle.
After the preliminary hearing, a Placer County judge held Maggi to answer on a felony charge of failure to maintain a child under the age of 14 and on 31 misdemeanor counts ย most of them involving missed child support payments.
Maggi, who has never seen his nine-year-old son and who now works as a hotel desk clerk, was scheduled for trial May 19, Mayhew said. Instead, theย defendant pleaded guilty to the felony count and to two misdemeanor charges, he said.
