A 21-year-old man from Rodeo, California was killed last night when he fell out of a vehicle, reportedly during some horseplay with other passengers. The driver was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence.

At 9:16 p.m. on Monday, July 2, Roseville Police and Fire Departments were called to Pleasant Grove Boulevard west of Roseville Parkway. A 1997 Ford Explorer with four occupants had just made a u-turn from eastbound Pleasant Grove Boulevard onto westbound Pleasant Grove Boulevard when one of the passengers, Richard Anthony William Combs, 21, of Rodeo, fell out of the open front passenger window onto the roadway. He was then struck by the rear tire of the vehicle. Combs was transported by ambulance to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

It appeared that the three passengers had been engaging in horseplay. Combs, who had been sitting in the back seat, unbuckled his seatbelt and stood up while wrestling with the other two passengers. He then fell out the front passenger window and was struck.

The driver, John David McMahan, 29, of Vallejo, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants. He is being held in the Placer County Jail on $50,000 bail.

The incident is being investigated by the Roseville Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team.
