Roseville, Calif.- At 6:21 p.m. Saturday, a Roseville Police Department officer responded to a suspicious person call in the area of Vernon Street and Lincoln Street.
A witness reported seeing a suspicious-looking man in the area, carrying a metal pipe. When the officer arrived on scene, the man, still carrying a three-foot-long metal pipe, fled on foot to a parking lot behind the 200 block of Vernon Street, and the officer pursued him on foot. The officer was heard yelling at the man to stop and to put the pipe down. The man then reportedly stopped and charged at the officer.
The officer first deployed a Taser in an effort to stop him, but was not successful. The officer then shot the man with his firearm. The man was transported by ambulance to Sutter Roseville Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The incident is under investigation. The officer, a six-year-veteran of the Roseville Police Department, was not injured. He has been placed on routine administrative leave. The deceased man’s name is being withheld pending notification of family.
