Man found dead in Auburn Canal

A man’s body was found in a PG&E canal in Auburn at 9:30 yesterday morning.

The man, a known Auburn-area transient, was found next to the strainer gate near Merry Knoll Road, off of Mount Vernon Road. Placer County Sheriff’s deputies are in the process of notifying the man’s family.

The Sheriff’s Department received a call from PG&E workers this morning who found the fully clothed man lying up on the bank of the Wise Canal. An automatic cleaning mechanism had lifted the man from a strainer gate, which cleans the canal throughout the day.

A forensics autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
