Auburn, Calif. -A cross country runner who became lost on the Western States Trail was located alive and well this morning by search personnel. Daniel Howard Rose, 46, from Orangevale is an experienced runner who was out training on the Western States Trail in the Foresthill area. Rose was unfamiliar with the trail system and became lost at approximately 11:00 am on Sunday morning. Fellow runners looked for Rose until approximately 2:30 pm Sunday when they reported the incident to the Placer County Sheriff”s Department.

The weather was expected to get very cold and Rose was not prepared to be out in the elements over night. A large scale search was initiated which included Helicopters, CHP’s fixed wing aircraft, 4WD and ATV teams, Dogs and approximately 40 Placer County Search and Rescue volunteers.

Rose had become turned around on the unfamiliar trails and darkness had fallen before he could find his was out. He came across an abandon cabin where he found an old shower curtain he wrapped himself in for warmth but due to a heavy rat infestation he could not stay in the cabin itself.

The CHP helicopter picked Rose up and transported him to the command post on Foresthill road where he was re-united with his wife.
