Local nonprofit health and wellness organization, Eppie’s Great Race Foundation, has scheduled the tenth annual “Eppie’s Kids Duathlon” (running and cycling) event, as well as a fun day of activities, healthy games, and an opportunity to earn The President’s Challenge Badge and Certificate, for Sunday, October 18, 2015, at Sacramento’s Discovery Park on the American River Parkway.

The Eppie’s Kids Duathlon (EKD) event incorporates a fun and exciting running, and then cycling, race for children 4 – 13 years. The Start times and course distances are varied in length to accommodate different age groups.

This year, a new “Adaptive Division” has been added to accommodate physically- and mentally-challenged children wishing to participate in the Duathlon. And proceeds from the EKD will benefit the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital of Northern California.

Following each age group/division’s Duathlon participation, participants will enjoy a children’s health and wellness event with a family fun focus, incorporating entertainment, and educational, hands-on health, nutrition, and fitness activities. All attendees that participate in the events and complete physical activity stations, can earn their national, “President’s Challenge” Fitness Patch and Certificate from the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition (an especially ideal opportunity for groups, after-school organizations, and home schoolers, to receive their “President’s Challenge” Patch/Certificate).

Children in age brackets from 4 – 13 years, are invited to run and cycle on special courses around Sacramento’s Discovery Park and the American River Parkway, during the EKD. The Discovery Park course site will allow parents and friends to watch and cheer on their kid competitors throughout the races. The participants are then invited to complete other fun, fitness stations, and then leave the event with their, “President’s Challenge” Fitness Patch and Certificate. The whole family can enjoy fun, hands-on activities, fitness obstacle courses, bounce houses, free health screenings, food and entertainment, among other activities. All participants will also receive shirts and prizes.

Why: The Eppie’s Great Race(r) Foundation presents the tenth annual “Eppie’s Kids Duathlon,” as a separate event from the July 18, 2015 42nd Annual Eppie’s Great Race(r). The primary goal of the EKD is to demonstrate to young people that healthy outdoor activities are fun, exciting, and rewarding; while simultaneously helping them to improve their fitness and overall health. The EGR Foundation chose to present EKD on Sunday, October 18, 2015, to better engage children while they are still in school. The rules of the EKD and more information regarding the October 18, 2015 event may be found on the EKD website: http://eppieskidsduathlon.org.

Who: Children ages 4 – 13 years are invited to compete in the Eppie’s Kids Duathlon; but families and children of all ages are welcomed to enjoy the Eppie’s Kids Duathlon Healthy Fun Fair. Volunteers are still needed to implement this great event; to register as an EKD volunteer, please contact Rich Hanna: [email protected]; or EKD Director Jim Geary: [email protected].

What is a Duathlon?
A Duathlon is an event that combines two activities, most commonly running and cycling. Training for and competing in Duathlon has become a popular way to achieve overall fitness, as a Duathlon requires more training, and makes use of more muscles, than if only training for one of these activities.

All Eppie’s Kids Duathlon participants will receive:
· A special Finisher’s Ribbon;
· A unique Eppie’s Kids Duathlon T-Shirt;
· Admission to the Eppie’s Kids Duathlon Healthy Fun Fair, featuring health and fitness activities, prizes, and snacks.

Entry Fees, Age Groups & Duathlon/Race Distances:
The cost of entry is $20 thru October 10, 2015; and $25 afterwards. The Eppie’s Kids Duathlon participant age groups, and distances are as follows:
* 4-6 year olds – 1/2 mile run and 1 mile bike;
* 7-10 year olds – 1 mile run and 4 mile bike;
* 11-13 year olds – 2 mile run and 5.5-mile bike.
