Constructed in the 1960s as part of the Auburn Dam project, the three-mile-long Auburn Tunnel runs under Auburn from the American River canyon to Ophir.
During the month of April, the Placer County Water Agency removed a 37-foot-long concrete plug from the 10-foot-diameter tunnel. Water began flowing through the tunnel on May 4.
