Sacramento, Calif.-ย— Assemblyman Ted Gaines, R-Roseville, today issued the following statement in response to Tuesday’s federal court ruling that California must reduce its prison population by nearly 43,000 inmates over the next two years:

‘The release of more than 40,000 prisoners puts our families at risk and I am very concerned for the public safety in communities across California,’ Gaines said. ‘These dangerous criminals are behind bars for one reason ย– because they are a threat to society. And it is very troubling that a court would turn these criminals loose onto our streets and into our neighborhoods where they can hurt innocent people.’

‘I am hopeful that this outrageous decision will be overturned on appeal immediately,’ Gaines said. ‘Even if it means taking this all the way to the Supreme Court, we should be doing everything we can to keep these criminals locked up and off our streets.’

Assemblyman Ted Gaines represents the 4th Assembly District, which includes portions of Placer, El Dorado, Sacramento & Alpine counties.
