More experienced palates often suggest Barbera as “the wine to bring when you don’t know what to bring.”

Fortunately for us, we had the privilege to get our hands on a bottle of Solitary Cellars 2014 Barbera. This wine follows their 2013 Double Gold medal from the 2016 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.

This was our first try at a Barbera wine and Solitary Cellars did not disappoint. Barbera is a red Italian wine grape variety that is prized for low tannins and high levels of acid.

It is often suggested to decant Barbera for at least an hour. We had a few sips immediately upon opening the bottle and it was quite smooth from first pour. The decanted  pours were noticeably smoother. Pours were served at room temperature.

In terms of heaviness, the wine seem to hit the sweet spot between a Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. In addition to a smooth fruit taste, the wine delivers a clean finish.

Solitary Cellars Barbera was easy to pair during our happy hour celebration. It was the perfect compliment to grilled Tri-Tip, red seedless grapes, creamy Taleggio cheese & crackers along with candied pecans and other assorted goodies for sampling.

The only downside was that we hadn’t discovered Barbera prior to today. It should make a great everyday wine and the next time you’re heading over to a friend’s place and not quite sure which wine to bring, Solitary Cellars Barbera is the perfect go to wine for any occasion!
