A 15-year veteran of the Placer County Sheriff’s Office was forced to shoot a man when the man failed to comply with instructions and reached for a handgun.
The identity of the 33-year-old Roseville man, who later died at Sutter Roseville Medical Center, will not be released until next-of-kin notification is complete.
The incident began at 10:32 Monday night at the Walgreens store at 4051 Douglas Blvd., in Granite Bay. The deputy was investigating the car as it was parked toward the back of the drug store, which had just closed for the evening and employees were still inside.
The deputy walked up to the car and contacted the driver, who was immediately uncooperative. The deputy saw a handgun on the front seat of the car, held the man at gunpoint and called for backup. When the man reached for the gun, the deputy was forced to fire his weapon, striking the man. The man was transported to the medical center, where he was pronounced dead.
The deputy is on paid administrative leave as is standard procedure following an officer-involved shooting.
