Rocklin Man named Cal Pac’s 2013 Coach of the Year

Rocklin, Calif.- William Jessup University’s Men’s Basketball Coach, Jeff Bussell has been named California Pacific Conference’s 2013 Coach of the Year.

Coach Bussell is in his ninth season as a coach for the WJU men’s basketball program. He has over 18 years of career experience as a collegiate and high school athletic administrator and director, coach and recruiter working with NAIA DII, NCAA DIII and NCAA DII men’s basketball programs. Bussell is an active member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

“I am humbled by earning this honor.  This award is only a reflection of the great players and staff I have the opportunity to work with everyday,” Bussell explained.  “They deserve all the credit. This award is for all the talented coaches I have worked for over the past nineteen years. I am blessed and thank God for providing me the opportunity to serve at a great university in a great program with great people.”

The Warriors recently clenched the 2013 Cal Pac regular season championship last week against Menlo College. It is the Warriors first championship since the 2009-10 season when they shared the championship with California Maritime and Holy Names.

As the number one seed for the Cal Pac Tournament, the Warriors will have a first round bye and host a semifinal game on Friday, February 22 at Horton Court in the Warrior Arena located at the growing university in Rocklin.

A native of Orangevale, CA, Bussell was a standout player at Casa Roble High School and was all-league honorable mention and a team captain his junior and senior year. Bussell played one year at Columbia College in Sonora, CA, where the Claim Jumpers advanced to the State Championships Final eight.

At the age of 19, he began his coaching career at his high school alma mater. He spent four seasons serving as assistant junior varsity, assistant varsity, and head freshman coach.

A graduate of Sacramento State, Bussell moved to Duluth, MN, where he was an assistant at the College of Saint Scholastica. CSS finished one game short from the NAIA tournament. He then moved to Concordia University-Minnesota to help lead them in transition to the NCAA II level.

Later, coach Bussell returned to Sacramento to coach at Sierra Christian High School where he started the athletics program at Sierra Christian Academy from the ground up. In just three years, as boys’ basketball coach and athletic director, he led the varsity boy’s basketball team to the Sacramento Valley Christian League title with the first senior class in school history.

Bussell was the head coach for the Athletes in Action team that traveled to Mexico City for a two-week mission trip. He has worked numerous camps across the country as well as in Arhus, Denmark and Tuxtla Gutierrez, Mexico.

Bussell received his bachelor’s degree from Sacramento State University and completed his master’s degree in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation in 2006 from Emporia State University, Kansas.

In addition to his coaching duties, Bussell serves as sports information and game management director at WJU. Jeff and his wife, Nicole, have been married since 2006. They have two daughters, Grace and Samantha and reside in Rocklin.
