Placer Food Bank Expanding Reach

Providing food directly to nonprofit organizations

Roseville, Calif. – Placer Food Bank, the primary food collection and distribution center for hunger-relief efforts in the region, announced that it will begin providing food directly to nonprofit organizations that supply food to residents in El Dorado County.

Placer Food Bank distributes more than 6 million pounds of food each year to hunger-relief groups in Placer, El Dorado and Nevada counties. The nonprofit organization feeds approximately 50,000 to 75,000 people per month.

Through its contract with Feeding America, Placer Food Bank remains dedicated to serving El Dorado County residents. One-third of Placer Food Bank’s current Feeding America food supply goes to the Food Bank of El Dorado County, which distributes the food to hunger-relief organizations. The other two-thirds of the food is shared by organizations in Placer and Nevada counties.

Placer Food Bank has given a 30-day notice to the Food Bank of El Dorado County in Cameron Park. The two organizations were aligned for the past 15 years through the Feeding America program.

“Our primary mission remains the same; nothing will change in regard to making sure that we are providing food to charitable organizations that feed the underserved in El Dorado County,” said Dave Martinez, Executive Director of Placer Food Bank. “This is not about competition. Food Bank of El Dorado will continue serving people in the county and we encourage those people to use both of us as food resources.”

Placer Food Bank will also begin providing fresh produce – such as apples, carrots, pears and potatoes – to organizations in El Dorado County, Chairman Gerad Borrego said.

“We’re not trying to compete but enhance our services to El Dorado County,” Borrego said. “We want organizations to take full advantage of the services available, and encourage them to use both resources.”

Placer Food Bank distributes fresh and non-perishable food to the hungry through its network of approximately 85 local hunger-relief and charitable organizations. It is the only local hunger-relief organization, and one of only 210 food banks nationwide, to be a certified member of Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity. Placer Food Bank is also a member of the California Association of Food Banks.

Placer Food Bank is the leading hunger-relief charity in Placer, El Dorado and Nevada counties. The organization has 16 full-time employees, four part-time employees and approximately 750 volunteers.
