Man Shot After Charging At Police

A Placer County Sheriff’s deputy was forced to shoot a Colfax man Sunday night after the man charged at another deputy with a knife.

Deputies were called to the suspect’s home for a family domestic violence call at 7:22 p.m. in the 24000 block of Tokayana Way. When deputies arrived, they were met in front of the house by Shaun Rainsbarges, 40, who was holding a knife. He refused deputies’ demands to drop the knife and one deputy deployed his Taser. The man was unfazed by the Taser and charged the deputy with the knife. Another deputy then fired one shot at the man, striking him in the torso.

Rainsbarges was airlifted to Sutter Roseville Medical Center and underwent surgery. He is expected to live. Once released from the hospital, he will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and child abuse. Child abuse charges stem from the initial call to the home. He may face further charges once the investigation is completed.

Both deputies are veterans of the Sheriff’s Office and were both placed on paid administrative leave per department policy. The Placer County District Attorney’s Office and sheriff’s detectives are continuing their investigation.
