Folsom’s Police Chief to Lead California Peace Officers Association

Folsom Police Chief Sam Spiegel will be installed as president of the California Peace Officers Association (CPOA) during the organization’s annual training conference at South Lake Tahoe on May 22.

Tom Sawyer, Public Safety Liaison to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, will give the keynote address during the general session and installation ceremony at the Embassy Suites Resort.  Law enforcement achievements will be recognized at the annual awards luncheon immediately following the installation.

Chief Spiegel currently serves as the CPOA’s first vice president.  He has been a member of the organization since 1983, holding posts at the regional level as well as on the board of directors and the executive committee. Sacramento Sheriff John McGinness will assume Spiegel’s position as first vice president.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to lead this outstanding organization of law enforcement professionals,” said Chief Spiegel.  “I am committed to CPOA being at the forefront of leadership development and training of California’s law enforcement personnel.”

Chief Spiegel has served as Folsom’s Police Chief since 2001, building a police organization that is recognized for innovative programming, as well as outstanding service to all segments of the community.  Two California governors have tapped him to serve on state committees ranging from Homeland Security to the 9-1-1 phone system advisory committee and the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System advisory committee.

“CPOA is lucky to have an individual of Chief Spiegel’s caliber in the top leadership position,” said City of Folsom Mayor Andy Morin.  “He has an extensive and distinguished career in law enforcement and has played a vital leadership role in local, regional and state issues.  Last year he also assumed a key leadership role for Folsom, serving as Interim Assistant City Manager and Interim City Manager during our national search for a permanent City Manager. He did an outstanding job during this transition period.”

CPOA provides public advocacy, professional development and training, and organizational networking opportunities for law enforcement professionals.  The organization, which was established in 1921, currently has more than 3,600 members from all ranks of municipal, county, state and federal enforcement agencies working in communities throughout the state.
