$7.4 Million in Contracts Approved for Placer County Roads

Repairing or replacing 75 miles of county roadway

Auburn, Calif. – With more than 1,000 miles of roadway to maintain, Placer County is continually replacing and repairing the surfaces of the county’s streets and highways. With cold winters and scorching hot summers, the road surfaces take a beating. Each year, the county prioritizes which roads will be repaired.

The board of supervisors today approved three contracts that will pave the way for repair and resurfacing of some 75 miles of roadway in unincorporated areas of the county. With the initial projects set to begin June 13, the county’s Department of Public Works and Facilities will manage five crews that will attack projects from the western end of the county to North Lake Tahoe.

“This will be the most intense resurfacing effort Placer County has seen in several decades,” said Kevin Taber, manager of Placer County’s Road Maintenance Division. “It will be hectic for everybody for a while, but our roads will be smoother and safer for it.”

Starting June 20, some daytime work will shift to day and night work to complete most of the projects by the end of June. Some road re-sealing will continue into July. and paving in Lake Tahoe will start after Labor Day. Placer road staff have coordinated with their Caltrans counterparts, utility companies and other jurisdictions to ensure the least possible conflict with other nearby construction projects.

Right now, preliminary work is being completed to coordinate contractors, equipment and notifications to residents of the impending work. Public works prioritizes roads based on the road condition, traffic volumes and available funding.

In the first contract that was given the OK by the supervisors today, Teichert Construction of Roseville was awarded a $2.4 million contract to repave five stretches of roadway totaling 3.6 miles, starting June 13. The roads include a portion of Douglas Boulevard in Granite Bay, and several roads in North Auburn: Nevada Street, Edgewood Road, Richardson Drive and Dry Creek Road. Funding for this contract comes from both county and federal highway funds.

The second contract was also awarded to Teichert Construction for $2.5 million for about 6 miles of roadway. These projects will put asphalt overlay on sections of roadway from West Roseville to Tahoe, including: Antelope Road, PFE Road, Sierra College Boulevard, Creekside Place, Northpark Place, Parkway Drive, Parkway Place, Southpark Place, Todd Valley Road and roads on Tahoe’s west shore. The contract will be paid for from funds set aside each year in the public works budget. Work is set to start June 20.

The third contract was awarded to VSS International of West Sacramento for approximately $2 million. This contract calls for three different types of road sealing treatments for about 65 miles of roadway to extend their useful life, set to start June 13. The cost of this work will come from funds set aside by public works for road repairs, as well as $1 million in general funds granted by the board of supervisors for the fiscal year 2015-2016 budget.
