$40,000 grant to fight underage drinking, alcohol sales

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office recently received a grant from the State of California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control for 2011-2012. The grant, totaling nearly $40,000, will be used to combat underage drinking and alcohol sales to minors in the county.  The grant will also assist the Sheriff’s Office in providing awareness and training in alcohol-related crimes and their impact for school staff, parents, students and the community.

Throughout the year, the Sheriff’s Office will aggressively target problematic ABC licensed establishments that sell alcoholic beverages to minors and obviously intoxicated adult patrons. The Sheriff’s Office recently conducted a Minor Decoy Operation in Loomis, Penryn, and Granite Bay.  A 19-year-old decoy was sent into 20 businesses and attempted to purchase alcohol.  The decoy was successful in purchasing alcohol at the AM/PM in Granite Bay at 8555 Auburn-Folsom Road.  The clerk who sold the alcohol, Kenneth Dowdy of Loomis, was cited for selling alcohol to a minor.

Anyone who sells or furnishes alcohol to a minor faces a fine of $250 and up to 24 hours of community service.  A report will also be forwarded to the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.  ABC may take administrative action on the business’ license to sell alcoholic beverages, impose a fine on the business, or both.

The Sheriff’s Office will also be offering LEAD (Licensee Education on Alcohol and Drugs) training several times throughout the year.  The LEAD Program is a free, voluntary prevention and education program for retail licensees, their employees, and applicants. The curriculum is designed for licensees, managers, and employees. The program is 3-1/2 hours long and participation is limited to 50 persons per class. The LEAD Program has received two national awards and is certified by the California Coordinating Council on Responsible Beverage Service.
