Auburn, Calif.- The Placer County Sheriff”s Office has arrested two men in separate cases for seeking sexual encounters with minors online.

Matthew Thomas Ishizaki, 23, of Auburn, was arrested Jan.7, when he arrived at an Auburn location to meet who he thought was a 13-year-old boy he’d corresponded with online. Instead, he met detectives who were the ones who’d actually responded to his ad.

Tuesday, detectives arrested Ryan David Coats, 38, of Citrus Heights, at his workplace. He did not show up for the planned rendezvous with whom he believed was a 13-year-old girl he’d met after posting an ad seeking a romantic encounter. However, detectives had the evidence they needed to make the arrest, since they had been corresponding with Coats.

Both suspects were charged with arranging to meet a minor for purposes of committing a sexual act. Coats was also charged with distributing harmful matter to a minor. Ishizaki was additionally charged with attempting to commit a lewd act with someone under the age of 13. Coats’ bail is set at $100,000 and Ishizaki was released on bail.

To avoid this sort of situation with your children, the Sheriff’s Office asks parents to educate themselves and become comfortable with the Internet. Communicate the dangers and risks of being online with children. Supervise children on the Internet just as you would monitor what movies and TV shows they watch and the places they go with their friends.

You would not let your children open the door to a stranger, so don’t let them spend long hours online alone. Using products that can be purchased in computer stores and on the Net, you can track your child’s use of the Internet and block objectionable material from reaching your household. But remember, no product can fulfill all your needs. There is no substitute for your involvement. Pay attention to your children because, if you don’t, someone else will.
