Pride Days at Sierra College
November 5, 2018 - November 6, 2018
Pride Days on the Rocklin Campus November 5-6, 2018Rocklin, CA- According to “Youth Development Current Trends,” gay, lesbian or bisexual students were over five times more likely to have attempted suicide in the past year and over three times more likely to miss or be threatened at school in the past three months. Sierra College decided to do something about it and has become a statewide leader in LGBTQIA+ education as a result. On Monday, November 5 and Tuesday, November 6, Sierra College Rocklin Campus will host the 8th Annual Pride Days. This is a two day educational event, tied closely to college curricula, that seeks to provide a safe and supportive learning environment for Sierra’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer students as well as rich, academic and cultural learning opportunities for all students. The event seeks to ensure that LGBT Students see themselves in the version of reality taught to them by Higher Education. The theme of this year’s Pride Days is the ways in which gender identity and sexual orientation intersect with race and ethnicity. Pride Days is a FREE event, and the public is welcome and encouraged to come. During this two day event, the Sierra College Rocklin Campus will be offering many presentations, movies, and live entertainment. Campus clubs and community organizations will be tabling throughout the Campus Quad. Use this link to view the schedule of events planned for Pride Days: http://www.sierracollege.edu/events/unique-events/pride-days.php On Monday, from 6-10 p.m. in W110, the director/producer of the film “Matthew Shepard is a Friend of Mine” will be present for a viewing of the film. The film coincides with the Theatre Arts Department’s production of The Laramie Project. The director/producer will also be present on Sunday November 4 for a post-Matinee of The Laramie Project to talk about the Matthew Shepard behind the legend. Refreshments will be provided. On Tuesday, from 6-10 p.m. in the Dietrich Theater will be our keynote and Staff/Student Drag Show. This year’s key note address will be delivered by Clarmundo Sullivan, the gay man of color who started Golden Rule Services, an HIV resource non-profit serving men of color. The keynote presentation will be followed by a faculty, student, and staff drag show. The Sierra College Rocklin Campus is located at 5100 Sierra College Blvd., Rocklin CA.
